President's Award for State Outreach and Public Engagement

2008 Winners Announced

The annual President’s Award for State Outreach and Public Engagement will be awarded later this spring. This award honors faculty, staff, and students who demonstrate exemplary outreach to the State of Iowa. Four separate awards, each carrying a $3,000 stipend, will be given: one each for individual faculty, staff, and students, and one for a group or organization.

Nominations are due April 25, 2008. Please see the award criteria and application process outlined below. Any UI faculty member, staff member, or student may nominate someone. Self-nominations are welcome.

Award criteria

1) Specific project or activity that extends the University’s mission, including research and teaching, for the benefit of the public good of Iowa citizens.

2) Past record of outreach will be considered.

3) All permanent (not temporary) full-time and part-time (50% or more) employees and students currently enrolled for 6 credit hours or more are eligible for nomination. Emeritus Faculty and graduate students in Continuous Registration are also eligible.

Application process

Nominations must include:

1) A description of the project or activity that is the basis of the nomination, including evidence of success, not to exceed 1,000 words.

2) For individuals: Vita, not to exceed 3 pages. For groups or organizations: Brief description (not to exceed 3 pages) of organization and its activities.

3) Two letters of support; at least one must be from a University of Iowa employee with specific knowledge of the project or activity.

Nominations are reviewed by a committee appointed by the President. The committee is well-represented by faculty, staff, and students. The selection committee will submit recommended awardees in each category (faculty, staff, student, group/organization) to the President, who will make the final decisions.

Seven copies (an original and six photocopies) of each nomination package should be sent to:
