Position Description

The Executive Vice President and Provost (the Provost) is The University of Iowa’s chief academic officer and the highest ranking university official after the President.  The Provost fosters the creation, advancement, and implementation of the academic vision for the University.  Responsible for all academic departments, colleges and programs, the Provost oversees the processes of faculty appointment, development, promotion and tenure, as well as faculty grievance procedures.  The Provost also establishes all academic policies, oversees reviews of all academic units, and leads and implements strategic planning.  In all his or her responsibilities the Provost works to attract and retain a diverse faculty, staff and student body.

The Provost represents the entire University in all respects in the President’s absence.  The Provost and Senior Vice President and Treasurer manage the annual University-wide budget process, working closely with the other Vice Presidents, Deans and faculty, staff and student leadership.  The Provost represents The University of Iowa at the Committee on Institutional Cooperation.  Reporting directly to the President, and as part of her leadership team, the Provost participates in all major decisions affecting the campus.

The Provost oversees a wide range of programs including the following units:

In addition to the deans and directors of the above units, the Provost oversees the following individuals:

  • Vice Provost (responsibilities include undergraduate education and the University College)
  • Associate Provost for Faculty
  • Special Assistant to the President for Equal Opportunity and Diversity and Associate Provost for Diversity (joint report to President and Provost)
  • Associate Provost for Academic Administration
  • Associate Vice President and Director of Administration and Planning

Position Requirements

The Provost Search Committee will evaluate candidates using the following criteria, which reflect the priorities that distinguish The University of Iowa.  The committee recognizes that no candidate is likely to have demonstrated strengths in all areas; however, the strongest candidates will meet all required qualifications and will also possess many of the desired qualifications outlined below.

Required Qualifications

  • An established intellectual leader, teacher and scholar of recognized accomplishment, appropriate for appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure
  • An earned terminal degree
  • Significant administrative experience, preferably at a major research university
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity
  • Personal and professional integrity and a commitment to honesty, ethics and human rights

Desired Qualifications

  • An understanding of the multiple missions of a public research university that includes a strong commitment to quality undergraduate education, distinguished graduate and professional programs, and the operation of a major teaching hospital
  • Experience with creating and sustaining an environment in which interdisciplinary learning, teaching, research, creative activity and scholarship flourish and complement one another
  • Experience with faculty review processes, including tenure and promotion review
  • A demonstrated commitment to and respect for:
    • fundamental fairness and due process in the implementation of professional and academic standards
    • the tenure system and academic freedom
    • different academic cultures at a complex university
  • Considerable experience in higher education administration, including:
    • the ability to hire and develop an administrative team
    • experience with budgets and financial planning
    • experience with strategic planning and implementation
    • an understanding of outcomes assessment
    • familiarity with resource development
    • knowledge of information technology
    • the ability to analyze problems, conceive practical steps to resolve them and follow through with solutions
  • The ability to serve as an effective leader and spokesperson for the University, internally and externally
  • An understanding of the resources needed to support contemporary and comprehensive education for undergraduate, professional and graduate students
  • Receptivity to governance shared with faculty, staff and students
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with external governing boards, such as regents or trustees
