Counseling Services
Welcome to the Counseling Services informational pages for University Counseling Service. The UCS offers a variety of counseling services, including individual counseling, group counseling, couple or relationship counseling, career assessment and testing, psychoeducational evaluation for learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder, referral services, and psychological consultation regarding mental health concerns you may have about a University of Iowa student or situation. All of the services are available to currently registered students. Nonstudents are eligible for a one-session consultation and possible referral. Except for testing and evaluation, all of our services are provided without charge.
Your first scheduled appointment with us when you seek out services will be a “consultation” and the purpose of that first meeting will be for you and your counselor to determine which service(s) best suit your individual needs. You can schedule a consultation appointment by calling (319) 335-7294. Once you have an appointment scheduled, please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early to complete paperwork on our in-house computer terminals. The actual consultation appointment typically lasts 45 to 50 minutes.
If an emergency occurs after hours, you are encouraged to call the Crisis Center at (319) 351-0140; Department of Public Safety at (319) 335-5022; or UIHC Emergency Room at (319) 356-2233. If you have concerns about another staff or faculty member, Faculty and Staff Services can be reached at (319) 335-2085.
The UCS offers the following services:
We encourage you to ask questions about these services and to discuss them further with your counselor.
