Medications and Psychiatric Services
The University Counseling Service is staffed by licensed psychologists and psychology interns. Neither licensed psychologists nor interns are permitted to prescribe psychiatric medications in the State of Iowa. UCS staff work closely with the Student Health Service, located right next door to our offices in the Westlawn building, to coordinate evaluations for psychiatric medications for any of our clients. The Student Health Service is staffed by primary care physicians, physician assistants, and psychiatrists. All of these health care providers are authorized to evaluate patients and prescribe psychiatric medications. If you have any questions about medications or about a referral for a medication evaluation, please bring them up with your counselor and she or he will do their best to answer them.
