CALL FOR PROGRAMS

The University of Iowa’s University Counseling Service (UCS) is pleased to announce the call for program proposals for the annual Big Ten Counseling Center Conference.  This year’s conference asks participants to reflect on the core values that guide their work in college counseling centers.  We invite presenters to consider both the unique aspects of providing services in this setting, as well as unifying themes that connect us to the provision of mental health across broader contexts.  University counseling centers have faced a number of challenges in recent years, including increased accountability, economic instability, increased psychopathology of our student population, higher demand for services, and the impact of the medical model on our practice.  This conference encourages reflections on the core values that keep us committed to our work as we serve our campus communities through clinical service, training, outreach, administrative work, and collaboration.  We anticipate discussion of our core values such as strengths-based approaches, appreciation for human diversity, and commitment to social justice.  Program proposals that address this year’s conference theme will be given priority consideration.

Proposals may be submitted electronically on our website.  Proposal acceptance is considered provisional, pending confirmation of a paid registration from each presenter.  Please provide all requested information on this proposal form.  Incomplete proposals may not be considered for selection.  The information included in the proposal, including all attachments, may be used for the conference program.  Please be sure that program title, synopsis, and description are accurate and complete, and that program objectives follow APA guidelines (see the following website for suggestions on how to write program objectives: http://www.apa.org/ed/sponsor/about/faq/objectives.pdf).  Include a brief vita/resume for each presenter.  More than one proposal may be submitted; however, multiple acceptances will be reviewed with consideration for conference schedule limitations.  Proposals are due no later than November 1, 2012.  A complete proposal includes presenter(s) information and vita(s), a 50-word program summary, program objectives, and a 400-word program description.

Proposals received past the deadline of November 1 may be considered per the discretion of the program planning committee.  Presentations will be either 60, 75, or 90 minutes in length, and presenters will be asked to identify a first and second choice for length of program with their proposal submission.  Presentation rooms will have laptops, LCD projectors, and internet access.  Presentations will be scheduled on Thursday and Friday (February 14 and 15).  Notification of selection will take place no later than December 1, 2012.
