WHAT: Writer-in-Residence Reading -- David Torrey Peters with Jo Ann Beard

WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 14

WHERE: Senate Chamber, Old Capitol Museum

David Torrey Peters, a native of Chicago, took a career aptitude test in high school that determined he had the makings of either a plumber or a fighter pilot. An unabashed pacifist with a fear of grime, he attempted to cheat his fate by fleeing to the Dominican Republic, then Hampshire College, then Cameroon, all on the pretext of education.  Eventually, he took a job as a production assistant in television news, but the news desk too closely resembled a cockpit, the fiber optic cables traveled in bunches too much like pipes. He moved to Iowa to try his hand at writing, a prospective career that combines the thrills of plumbing with a job market like that of the aviation industry.

Jo Ann Beard is a graduate of the Nonfiction Writing Program at Iowa, and the author of a collection of autobiographical essays, The Boys of My Youth, and a forthcoming novel. Her writing has appeared in magazines, literary journals, and anthologies, and she is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in nonfiction writing, a grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and a Whiting Award for Emerging Writers. She grew up in Moline, Illinois, and now lives in Rhinebeck, New York.

WHAT: Gallery Talk -- Daniel Heyman: The Amman Portfolio

WHEN: 4 p.m. Thursday, December 4

WHERE: Old Capitol Museum, room TBD

Join artist Daniel Heyman for a tour of his haunting and highly topical artwork, which includes portraits of former Abu Ghraib prisoners. Heyman, accompanying lawyers to Amman, Jordan, scratched his impressions directly onto etching plates during the former prisoners' legal depositions. In this talk, hear Heyman discuss his working process and motivation, and get a chance to ask questions.

WHAT: Know the Score LIVE!

WHEN: 5-7 p.m. Friday, December 5

WHERE: Senate Chamber, Old Capitol Museum

In conjunction with the Daniel Heyman: The Amman Portfolio exhibition,  this special edition of Know the Score LIVE! will be in the form of a panel discussion about art, human rights, and current political issues. This exhibitions and its programming are a collaborative venture between the UIMA, Old Capitol Museum, and the UI Center for Human Rights.
