Faculty Involvement in COGS Negotiations

COGS (Campaign to Organize Graduate Students – UE Local 896) is the collective bargaining unit for graduate student teaching assistants and research assistants at the University of Iowa. The parties to the contract negotiations are COGS and the Board of Regents/University of Iowa administration. Many faculty members support graduate student research assistants through external research funds (i.e., funds not generated by student tuition or from legislative appropriations) and as a result increases in stipends and benefits directly affect these faculty members. Nonetheless, faculty members are not a party to these contract negotiations.

To address this issue, the Executive Committee sent an explanatory document to the University of Iowa Research Council, offered a proposal, and two of its members met with the Research Council.
