The University of Iowa

UI Chapter Purpose

The University of Iowa Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) works to further the Association’s mission:

  • to defend academic freedom
  • to encourage and facilitate faculty participation in governance, and
  • to protect and advance the professional status and interests of faculty

The Chapter disseminates information on higher education principles and practices and conveys the policies and views of the Association to administrators, governing boards, local and state legislative bodies, and the general public.

The Iowa Chapter of the AAUP provides:

Position papers on topics of interest to faculty. It works closely with the Faculty Senate in drafting changes to official University documents, revising current policies, and creating updates to the Operations Manual.

Free, confidential advice through Committee A for faculty members who encounter problems with academic freedom, tenure, promotion, or due process.

Events for faculty, including a yearly meeting, a new faculty picnic, and tenure and promotion workshops.

Subsidies for new members, so they can join at 50% the regular rate for three years.

Academic freedom is the guiding principle of the academic community; tenure is the guarantor of academic freedom.
