Thursday, November 29, from 2 - 4 there will be an open house at the African American Studies Offices on the 5th Floor of the Jefferson Building.

A POROI Rhetoric Seminar, "I Have Paid First-Class Fare": The Black Middle Class Performing Full Citizenship by Vershawn Young, Department of Rhetoric and African American Studies and
Bridget Harris Tsemo, Department of Rhetoric and African American Studies, will be held Friday, November 30th, from 5pm - 7pm at 106 Bowman House.
--Seminar guests are encouraged to read papers in advance of presentation.  This paper is available on the POROI website.


Performances, poetry, and politics were melded into an exploration of black culture, history and viewpoints during From Bourgeois to Boojie--Black Middle-Class Performances, a two day symposium (October 24 and 25) co-sponsored by African American Studies. For full details, please visit this site.

African American Studies at Iowa

African American Studies focuses on the study of people of the African descent in the United States and the African diaspora, particularly in the United States.

This interdisciplinary unit draws on faculty from many departments, including: Communication Studies, English, Health and Sport Studies, History, Journalism & Mass Communication, Religious Studies, Rhetoric, Sociology, and Theatre Arts.

A major and a minor in African American Studies are offered for undergraduates. The M. A. in African American World Studies is not accepting students at this time.
