Luring the "sacred crocodiles" of Sabou Burkina Faso, June 1998 Photo ©1998 by L. Lee McIntyre |
In an effort to bring hard currency (US dollars and French francs) into the economy, many countries have developed sites that appeal to tourists that are represented as examples of traditional magical beliefs or examples of creative activity. This is the "sacred pool of crocodiles" near Sabou, which has become one of the first site tourists are taken to see in Burkina Faso. As the story goes, the crocodiles showed the people who first settled Sabou where to find the water source, and hence share a special bond with the people of Sabou.
