Stencilling bogolan, tourist compound near Bandiagara escarpment, Mali, June 1998
Photo ©1998 by L. Lee McIntyre

Two men are using a cut metal stencil to apply mud to the surface of a cotton textile. The mud will dye the cloth dark brown to black and produce an elaborate patterned textile called bokolanfini, which is worn by Malians and is sold in large quantities to tourists. Normally the mud is painted freehand: the stencil speeds up the process but produces a coarser pattern.
