This is an example of one of the large villages built up on the talus slopes of the cliffs. Talus slopes are created as rocks break away from the cliffs and crash to the ground, forming large slopes of broken rock. Because these slopes are impossible for farming and were, centuries ago, safe from attack, Dogon villages have often been built here. Some of these structures are homes, others are graneries.
