This is the dry, sandy wilderness at the edge of the city of Bandiagara. Paths used by herders to bring cattle and sheep to market and for farmers to reach their fields lead into the country side. The rainy season had just begun when this picture was taken. Within a few weeks these fields would be deep in crops such as corn and millet.
