Dogon granaries, Dogon village, near Bandiagara escarpment, Mali, June 1998 Photo ©1998 by L. Lee McIntyre |
These are Dogon granaries. Each one is built up of clay, with a solid clay base supported by rocks. The structures are raised off the ground to keep termites and rats from getting inside. The walls are solid clay, as is the roof, to keep out pests, and the roof is covered with a cap of straw thatch to keep the rain from washing away the clay during the rainy season. The granary in the right foreground has had its thatch roof removed temporarily.
