Basket salesmen carrying baskets, market day, Bandiagara, Mali, June 1998

On the morning of market day a group of men who earn their living making baskets carry their new baskets to a stall where they will be offered for sale. In Dogon mythology the square bases of the baskets represent the Dogon fields, and the circular rims represent the encircling horizon in a contrast that is a metaphor for cosmic and human realms.
