Here one of the foursided baskets that the Dogon and many other people in west Africa use to carry and store goods is used to display goods for sale in the market in Bandiagara. In many markets individual vendors are charged a small fee to rent a stall, or set up a display of their goods. Almost everyone in the community produces a surplus of some commodity and offers it for sale, while everyone purchases food and essential goods such as kerosene for lamps, batteries for radios, and tubes for bicycle tires in the market.
