Africa Cup billboard with mascot, Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, June 1998 Photo ©1998 by L. Lee McIntyre |
For African countries to be asked to host large international sporting events is a point of great national pride. When Burkina Faso was invited to host the regional playoffs for the 1998 World Cup of soccer, signs were erected, a stadium was built, and the attention of the entire nation turned to soccer. This billboard shows a picture of the mascot for the games; a huge statue of this figure stands at the entrance to the airport in Ouagadougou.
