Home Page (Cosmogram):

Click on the name of a chapter around the cosmogram to see chapter's Overview.

Click on a resource at the bottom of the screen (Countries, Peoples, etc.) to view.

Field Essays:

Click on pictures in essay to enlarge them

Click on picture captions to jump to entry for image in the Images Catalog.

Chapters:

Click on pictures of objects to rotate them (if cursor changes to cylinder).

Click on picture captions to jump to entry for image in the Images Catalog.

Countries Database Entry:

Click on Map to enlarge it.

Highlight a peoples on the map by pointing to their name to the left of the map.

Click on the name of a people to the left of the map to jump to Peoples Database.

Click on the "Statistics", etc., tabs to see additional information on the country.

Peoples Database Entry:

Click on the "Economy", etc., tabs to see additional information on the country.

The "Types of Art" tab lists images in the program related to the current people.

Click on an item in the "Types of Art" list to jump to entry in the Images Catalog

Images Catalog Overview:

In the Browse mode, click on the alphabet letters to list images by peoples.

In the Search mode, use the "People", "Country", "Type" fields (etc.) to enter criteria for a search of the Images Catalog, then click on the "Find Items" button.

In both modes, once a list of items is generated, move the mouse pointer over the list of found items. A thumbnail of each image will appear; click on an item in the list to jump to entry in the Images Catalog.

Images Catalog:

Click on a thumbnail to enlarge image.

Click on the "Text References" tab for list of Chapters and Essay screens relating to the image; click on a reference in the list to jump to that screen.

Click on the "Catalog Entry" tab, if there is one, to see the catalog entry for the current object (available for the Stanley Collection objects only).

Media Catalog:

Click on the "Text References" tab for list of Chapters and Essay screens relating to the media clip; click on a reference in the list to jump to that screen.

Use the buttons to play the media clip.

Bibliography:

Use the "People", "Country", etc., fields to enter criteria for a search of the bibliography (there are 1400 entries in the Bibliography), then click on the "Search Bibliography" button.

The only field you can type in is the "Author's Last Name" field.

The "Field Essays" field searches for all bibliographic references related to the essay topic by the listed author, and not just references used for writing the essay.

Use the "Clear Fields" button to empty out the criteria fields to start a new search.

Index and Slide Show:

Use the "People", "Country", etc. fields to search the entire ALA program for Objects, Field Photos, Media, and Text relating to the search criteria.

Control-click on an item in "Index Items Found" list to jump to item in the program

You can compile a "Slide Show" list from multiple searches in the Index. This feature allows you to create custom presentations using all the material available in the ALA program. For complete step-by-step instructions on using the Slide Show Feature, choose "Slide Show Tips" from the Tools menu.

Throughout entire program:

Choose "General Tips" on the Tools menu for help with buttons and navigation.

Words in color are clickable links: Peoples (blue), Countries (green),
Glossary (
red), Chapter/Essay cross-reference (pink).

"Print" on the File menu will print out the information on the screen in a text layout.

"Print Screen" on the File menu will print out an image of the screen, including the background pattern and buttons.

The "Go" Menu lists at the bottom of the menu the last 20 screens visited.

When passing the cursor over objects on the screen, the cursor will change shape based on what will happen when you click on that object. For example:
