Glossary

de-reconstructed:

Taking apart (physically or mentally) something that has already been taken apart and put back together (though not necessarily in the same form).

deculturation:

Efforts to separate people from their own cultural traditions; here referring to missionary activity aimed at breaking people from their 'traditional' beliefs and activities.

deflowered:

To have ones first sexual experience.

deforestation:

The large scale cutting down or clearing away of trees.

deified:

Made or treated as a God.

deities:

God or goddesses. A higher spiritual being.

deity:

A god or goddess. A higher spiritual being.

delineate(d):

Depict(ed) in words or gestures; described.

demeanor:

The way in which one behaves.

denizens:

Inhabitants or residents.

denoting:

Indicating or meaning.

depict(ed)(ing):

Represented in a picture or sculpture. Represented in words; described.

desecrated:

Having violated something sacred; having improperly treated a religious object/idea.

despot:

A ruler with absolute power. Any tyrant or oppresser.

despotic:

Of or like a despot (ruler with absolute power).

devotee:

A person who is devoted to something, usually to a religion or a specific God or Goddess.

diadem:

Crown

diagnostic:

Serving to identify a particular disease, problem or action.

dialectic:

Arriving at the truth by the exchange of logical arguments.

diaspora:

The dispersion of people from an original geographical source. Here referring to the movement of peoples from many countries in Africa to the Americas, called the Atlantic Diaspora.

didactic:

Intended to instruct.

diffusion:

The process of spreading out or dispersing of objects, ideas and/or people.

dignitaries:

People of high rank or position.

dilapidated:

In a state of decay or ruin.

diminutive:

Extremely small in size; tiny.

dire:

Urgent or desperate.

discern(ed)(ible):

Seen or understood.

discernment:

Exhibiting insight and good judgment.

discrete:

A separate and distinct thing.

disemboweling:

To remove the intestines from a body.

disparate:

Fundamentally distinct or different in kind; entirely dissimilar.

dissemination:

Spread widely.

dissonance:

A disagreeable combination of sounds. Also, a lack of agreement or consistency.

diverse:

Differing one from another.

divination board:

A device used by a diviner to tell of future events or revealing knowledge gained through association with supernatural powers (God).

divination literature:

Published writings on the subject of divination.

diviner:

A person who is able to determine the source of illness or trouble, usually with the assistance of a God.

divulged:

Made known or revealed.

double-entendre:

A word or phrase having a double meaning.

dovecoat:

A structure for housing domestic birds, particularly pigeons.

dualism:

The condition of being double, or having two distinct characteristics.
