Glossary

eccentric:

Strange.

echelons:

Levels of responsibility or authority in a hierarchy: a rank.

edifice:

A building, especially one of imposing appearance or size. May also relate to an elaborate idea.

efface:

To rub or wipe out; erase.

effect sacred transformations:

Boys are taught how to perform in a masquerade, changing from a human into a sacred being.

effected:

To have made happen; to cause change.

egalitarian:

Characterized by belief in equal political, economic, social, and civil rights for all people.

elicit:

To bring or draw out.

emanation:

Something flowing out of or emitted from another source

embellish(ed)(ing):

Make beautiful, as by ornamentation; decorated. May extend to language as well as to a thing.

embellishments:

Decorations.

emblazoned:

Richly decorated and/or colorful.

emblem(s):

Symbol.

emblematic:

Symbolic.

embody(ies) (power):

Represents in material form. Also, to make part of a system or whole; to incorporate.

embodiment:

Representing in material form. Also, making part of a system or whole; incorporating.

embourgeouisement:

The growth of the bourgeoisie, or middle class, in a culture, including increased desire for material goods.

emissaries:

People sent on a mission to represent or advance the interests of another; similar to ambassadors.

emulated:

Attempted to equal or excel through imitation.

emulation:

Imitation of another.

encompass:

To enclose or include.

endemic:

Found in large numbers in a particular locality, region, or with a particular group of people.

endogamous:

Marriage within a particular group.

endowed:

Equipped or supplied with a talent or quality.

enfranchise(s):

To free, as from slavery. Also, to give rights of citizenship or membership, especially the right to vote.

enigmatic:

Puzzling.

enthronement:

To invest a leader, particularly a king, with the authority of high office.

entity:

Something that exists as a whole and separate unit.

entourage:

A group of attendants, often in association with a leader.

entreprenurial:

Dealing with creative or risky business efforts.

ephemeral:

Lasting for only a short time.

equated:

Considered, treated, or depicted as the same as something else.

equestrian:

Relating to horseback riding or horseback riders.

escarpment:

A steep slope or long cliff that results from erosion. Also, a steep slope in front of a fortification.

esoteric:

Intended for or understood by only a particular group.

esthetic:

Concerning the appreciation of beauty or good taste, as well as theories about the nature of art and artistic expression.

ethnographer(s):

A person who deals with the scientific description of specific human cultures.

evoke(s)(ing):

Calls to mind or suggests: a song that evokes old memories.

exalted:

Raised in rank or status. To glorify, praise, or honor.

excision:

The removal or partial removal of a woman's clitoris.

exclusively:

For personal or restricted use; not meant to be shared.

execute(d):

To put into effect or carry out.

exegetical:

Relating to a critical explanation.

exemplified:

Served as an example of, or illustrated by example.

exogamy:

The custom of marrying outside one's family, clan, or other social unit.

explicit:

Fully and clearly expressed. Easily observable.

extemporaneous:

Carried out or performed with little or no preparation.

extols:

Praises.

extraneous:

Not an important element or part.
