Glossary

labyrinth:

Something highly intricate in composition or construction; a maze.

lactation:

Secretion or formation of milk by the mammary glands.

lament:

To express grief or regret.

latitude of reference:

The viewer will think of a number of different, but related, ideas when seeing this mask.

latter:

Near or nearer to the end. The last one of a series of things.

legitimation:

The official demonstration of authority or right.

legitimizing:

Actions, behavior, clothing or attachments which demonstrate authority or right.

libation(s):

The pouring of a liquid offering in a religious act. Also, the liquid poured.

liminal:

The space or time between one thing and another; dusk and dawn are neither day nor night, they are liminal periods.

liminality:

The state of being either on the edge of something new, or between two things. Adolescence is on the verge of adulthood, but is neither adulthood nor childhood.

lineage:

The descendants of a common ancestor.

linear:

Resembling a line. Having only one dimension.

linguistically:

Of or relating to language.

lintel:

The horizontal beam that forms the upper member of a window or door frame and supports the structure above it.

literal:

Word for word; avoiding exaggeration.

lithograph:

A printing process in which the image to be printed is rendered on a flat surface and treated to retain ink while the non image areas are treated to repel ink.

locomotion:

The act or ability of moving from one place to another.

locus:

A place. Also, a center or focus of great activity.

loftiness:

Elevated in character. Also, arrogant.

longitudinally:

Placed or running lengthwise.

lozenge:

A four-sided figure with a diamond like shape.
