Objectives (what will be assessed?):

Students will observe and participate in the process of making a headdress.

Description/Background:

As a follow-up to a discussion of hats as defining who we are both in our culture as well as other cultures, specifically certain African countries, students will use their original designs to plan and create a headdress that uses symbols from their own perspective.

Step by Step Procedure:

1. Review headdresses in the "Art and Life in Africa" CD. (run slide show) 2. Discuss how headgear is important to the African culture as well as our own. 3. Create a piece of headgear using collage materials glued, stapled, to a wrap around the head made of colored oaktag. 3. Discuss the 3-D aspects of sculpture needed to view the completed headgear.

Assignment in CD (essays, chapters):

Index and slide show (use "hat" as type and "any" in the rest) You will see 47 items. Pick and choose. Students will select one for their own individual comparisons.

Studio Materials Needed:

colors of oaktag cut into strips and various shapes,collage materials,glue, scissors, paper punch

3-dimensional, headdress, symbol

Evaluation/Assessment tool (how will objectives be assessed?:

check for understanding by students' discussion of selected work of the African artist and her/his own completed project.
