Objectives (what will be assessed?):
Students will make a contemporary connection to ancient reliquary vessels by creating a personal ancestral vessel of honor. (i.e.. A special container for grandma's brooch / grandpa's pocket watch versus a reliquary vessel for their bones or other special objects.)
Description/Background:
Using a teacher-selected slide show from the "Art and Life in Africa" CD plus Internet bookmark selections, students will research the culture, people, and geography, as well as the specific tradition of a reliquary. Students will also visit the local art museum and view reliquaries from the museum collection
Step by Step Procedure:
1. Presentation of slideshow and teacher directed discussion of material (Comparing / contrasting connection between African and American observances in honoring ancestors.) (click here to view or download sample list)
2. Presentation / identification of art problem to be solved. Discussion of criteria / parameters.
3. Brainstorming possible solutions and idea sketches.
4. Teacher demonstration / review of pottery techniques.
5. Students process problem and construct vessel.
6. Teacher demonstration of surface embellishment and finishing techniques.
7. Students complete vessel.
8. Individual / collective evaluation and presentation of piece.
