Title/Lesson/Theme: The unique nature of various African countries
Designed by: anonymous (workshop participant)
Grade level/Discipline: Grades 9-12/Social Studies, French
Estimated Time: 2 weeks
Objectives (what will be assessed?):
Students will be able to give a presentation about people in an African country in which French is spoken and which is served by the Peace Corps. Students will concentrate on the lives and art of the ethnic groups.
Description/Background:
Students typically know very little about African peoples and ethnic groups within those countries. By doing a presentation in which they use various resources, their knowledge and hopefully understanding will increase. Since my students correspond with students from some of these countries, usually in which we have Peace Corps workers, this knowledge of their correspondents' lives , beliefs, etc., is essential.
Step by Step Procedure:
l. Teacher will give an overview of Africa, including and stressing some ideas from "Key Moments in Life." Some type of study guide will accompany this teacher presentation.
2. Students, using resources from the CD and the Web, as well as other resources of choice, will choose a country (in pairs) and prepare 2 presentations. The presentations are discussed below in Assessment.
3. The countries to choose from are: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Congo-Zaire, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Guinea-Conakry, Mali, Morocco, Senegal, Chad and Togo.
Assignment in CD (essays, chapters):
From Homepage of "Art and Life in Africa" CD, use "countries" and "peoples" categories for very general information. From CD chapters, pick two categories (chapters) to study more in depth (i.e. education and everyday endeavor) and related art work.
Studio Materials Needed:
none
Vocabulary:
The pertinent vocabulary from the parts of the CD that students are using.
Evaluation/Assessment tool (how will objectives be assessed?:
