Title/Lesson/Theme:Images of Work and Play in Art. Images of Children in Africa.

Grade level/Discipline: Grade 2/Social Studies

Estimated Time: Two weeks 30 minute time periods

Objectives (what will be assessed?):

Children will observe and discuss children in other cultural settings. Children will compare activities of work and play with their own life experiences by writing a personal narrative.

Description/Background:

This lesson will be included as a part of the "Working Hard and Having Fun: Images of Work and Play in Art" developed by an Advisory Council of Quad City educators.

Step by Step Procedure:

1. View and freely discuss images from the Slide Show

2. Review pictures using selected text references to discuss concepts of work and play.

3. Partners view Slide Show to select a picture of personal interest and experience.

4. Students will write a draft of their personal experience story. They will work with partners to edit and correct the stories for publication.

5. Publish and illustrate.

6. Each student will share h/h story and the selected Slide Show picture with the class .

Assignment in CD (essays, chapters):

Select a picture from the Slide Show that reminds you of something you have seen or done.

Write a story that tells an experience you have had that is similar to that of the children in the picture.

Vocabulary:

Words will be added to a wall chart as needed.

Observing continued freedom of discussion.
