Objectives (what will be assessed?):
Students will discuss/observe headgear. They will compare familiar forms of hats with those of other cultures. They will be introduced to the headgear of the diviners of the Luba people of the Congo (Zaire) in Africa. They will compare the role of the diviner to those in other cultures( shaman, priests, psychologists, etc.) They will design and create headgear for themselves based on the examples observed in class.
Description/Background:
Through discussions, observations and a slide presentation the students will learn about a particular group of people who wear a certain article of clothing on their head as a part of a costume for determining illness or trouble in people.
Step by Step Procedure:
1. Discussion of headgear.
2. Show examples.
3. Introduce the Luba people of the Congo(Zaire) Africa- in particular the diviners.
4. Show slide show from ALA CD. A discussion will take place during this about observations of materials, colors, shapes in the design of the headgear.
5. Students will do a pencil design of a headdress they are going to create- paying attention to color, shape and line.
6. Each student will create a headdress based on his/her drawing- adding 3D materials.
Assignment in CD (essays, chapters):
Bookmark examples will be available on the computer for students to refer to for ideas and to observe other forms of headgear form that same region of Africa.
Studio Materials Needed:
Tagboard or foam sheets(flexible),beads, leather lacing, colored paper, yarn, raffia, glue, dried grasses or flowers, etc.
Vocabulary:
Diviner headdress- nkaka(taken from the pangolin animal), diviner, attire
Evaluation/Assessment tool (how will objectives be assessed?:
Completion of the headdress.
