Title/Lesson/Theme: Fabric patterns/African Peoples (one look at the similarities and differences among Peoples)

Objectives (what will be assessed?):

Students will look at and discuss:

o the similarities and differences in fabric patterns created by a variety of African peoples

o repeat patterns found in their clothing

o compare the how fabrics are used in each culture

Students will make:

o cardboard block design

o repeat pattern fabric design using printing block

Description/Background:

Students can begin to understand the commonality found between Peoples by looking at designs in fabric. They can also begin to explore the way that repeated design can form a more complicated pattern.

Step by Step Procedure:

Day 1:

Students will look at African Fabric Slide Show (click here to view or download sample slide show list). Through the Art and Life Video they will look at and discuss the pattern, design elements and color that they see. Students will also look at the location of the countries and Peoples who created the fabrics, the use of the fabrics as well as differences and similarities of fabric patterns found in their culture.

Students will use tag board to cut simple geometric shapes that will be glued to a 4"x4" cardboard square to create a printing block.

Day 2

Using black printing ink and brayers students will create a repeat pattern design on colored paper or brown wrapping paper.

Day 3

Students can share blocks to add borders to their designs. They can use add different colors to the design from the previous week.

Set out printed paper and discuss the results.

Studio Materials Needed:

Tag board, 4"x4" piece of cardboard per student, glue, scissors, brayers, printing ink, inking surface, large colored paper or brown wrapping paper.

Vocabulary:
