Objectives (what will be assessed?):
Students will observe and participate In the processes of carding, spinning, dyeing and weaving wool and cotton fibers. They will compare African and Western (European) processes and traditions surrounding fiber arts.
Description/Background:
Field trips, speakers and research will play an important part role in this unit, as students visit a local sheep farm, spinner, weaver and gallery. They will also research African textile processes and products by reviewing information in the "Art and Life in Africa" CD. As the culmination of this unit, students will card, spin, dye and weave wooI fibers into a group project.
Step by Step Procedure:
I . Participate in field trips & attend to speakers.
2. Review African weaving processes (worksheet).
3. Card wool into rologs & spin fiber with drop spindle (at least 10 feet of yarn).
4. Dye with walnut hulls or indigo dye.
6. Weave on loom with automatic heddle.
6, Write 1 thank you note to speaker of choice.
