The effort is always to make use of new materials in ways that enhance the quality of the art, as the Malian artist Yacouba Kone has done in these two works titled The Spirit and Fire. Kone makes use of pigments that are found naturally in Mali, and which have been used for centuries by artists creating for ceremonial use.
