Become a Tutor

Qualifications

A. Personal Attributes:

  1. Disciplined, Trustworthy, Responsible & Flexible

  2. Possess a Love of Reading and Writing

  3. Be Hardworking and an Understanding of Professionalism

  4. Have the Desire to Make a Difference in the Life of a Child


B. Prerequisites:

  1. Work Study Award (Volunteer positions are also available.)

  2. A schedule that allows for TRAINING (you are paid for training time)

    1. 2-Week Mandatory Training Monday through Friday during the 3rd and 4th Weeks of each semester - 9:30-11:20 or 12:30-2:20 (times can be mixed and matched to suit tutor schedules)

  3. Ability to attend weekly Workshop (you are paid for Workshop time)

    1. Workshops begin the 5th week of each semester - Wed or Thurs 3:30-4:20


Work Schedule

A. Once training is complete, work hours are flexible.

B. You may work anytime between 8:30am and 3:00pm or 3:30pm and 5:00pm.(3:30-5:00 hours are for the After School Program)

C. Morning Hours are encouraged because most teachers offer reading instruction at the beginning of the school day.

D. You may work up to a maximum of 20 hours per week; however, a minimum of 8 hours per week is required.


General Job Description

A. Tutors are paid between $10.00 and $12.00 per hour for all tasks required.

B. Tutors provide 30 minute, one-on-one tutoring sessions with 1-4 children / 2-3 days per week at the school site.

C. You will work with the same children for 1 or more semesters.

D. For each session you will need to:

  • Prepare a lesson plan for each child for each tutoring session

  • Locate and bring books appropriate for the child's reading level

  • Find/Create games and/or activities that target skills in need of emphasis

E. Tutors will attend weekly Workshops where they will:

  • Gain new teaching knowledge and talk to colleagues regarding teaching issues

  • Complete weekly workshop assignments

  • Write "Lesson Summaries" that discuss areas of instruction focused on in tutoring sessions

Service Area

Tutors service elementary schools (K– 6) students in the Iowa City area that are experiencing difficulty learning to read.
