Kevin Flaherty (senior) received an Iowa Center for research by Undergraduates (ICRU) Scholar Assistantship for 2008-2009 to conduct zooarchaeological research on the effects of long-term hunting to animal populations in Great Palins (Supervisor: Matthew Hill).
Kathryn (Maggie) Schmidt, a senior Anthropology major, received a Collegiate Scholar Award in April 2008.
Briana Horwath received an Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates (ICRU) Scholar Assistantship for 2008-2009 to support her honors project: Dental Evidence for Biological Affinity in Neolithic Portugal: An Analysis of Two Neolithic Burial Sites (supervisor: Katina Lillios).
John Willman (senior) was awarded an ICRU Summer Research Fellowship in order to participate in the 2008 excavation season at the Neolithic rockshelter burial of Bolóres, Portugal, under the direction of Katina Lillios, and to continue his analyses of the human remains from the site in her laboratory.

Ellen Lewin is serving a three-year elected term on the Executive Board (EB) of the American Anthropological Association. As part of her work on the EB, she is chairing the Search Committee for a new Editor-in-Chief for the AAA's flagship journal, American Anthropologist. She is also a member of one of two EB subcommittees, the Committee on Scientific Communication, which overseas the AAA's publishing program, including AnthroSource.
Scott Schnell has been chosen to take over as co-editor of Asian Folklore Studies, along with Ben Dorman of Nanzan University in Nagoya, Japan. Asian Folklore Studies is an international, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the promotion of ethnological research involving the peoples and cultures of Asia. The journal presents formal essays and analyses, research reports, and critical book reviews relating to a wide range of topical categories, including: narratives, performances, and other forms of cultural representation; localized religious concepts; varying approaches to health and healing; traditional ecological knowledge; grassroots political movements; ethnohistory and historical memory. The editors seek to promote intellectual exchange between the eastern and western hemispheres and particularly welcome submissions from scholars based in Asia.
Rebecca Shattuck (senior) and Brooks Obr (Sophomore) were awarded Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates (ICRU) Scholar Assistantships for working on archaeological material in Jim Enloe’s Zooarchaeolgical Laboratory. Rebecca has been funded for the Fall 2007 semester, and Brooks will be funded for the Spring 2008 semester.
Undergraduate anthropology major Andrew McDowell won the Rhodes Dunlap Collegiate Scholarship for tuition support in 2007-2008.

Goodbye to Grant McCall, former graduate student and visiting assistant professor, who has moved to New Orleans for a tenure-track job at Tulane University.
Andrew McDowell was awarded the Stanley Undergraduate fellowship for research abroad. He will spend the summer of 2007 improving his language skills and doing research on medical decision making and why people consult with untrained health providers in Bardi Sadri, India.

To aid in her preparations for future Ph.D. fieldwork Meredith Anderson was awarded a Stanley Graduate fellowship for the summer of 2007. She is examining the availability of collections of materials from Teotihuacan period (150 BC- AD 650) sites in the northeastern Basin of Mexico as well as examining the status of sites located during earlier surveys.

Long-time faculty member, Doug Midgett retired in May, 2006. Doug came to the University of Iowa in the early 1970’s and continues to serve the department as an emeritus faculty member.
