Background:

My research interests combine biological and cultural factors in the study of health and healing. In recent years I have become interested in the health outcomes of psychosocial stress, most recently in the long-term health effects of war trauma in Angola. I am involved in several research projects there focusing on the strategies Angolans are using today to cope with the losses they experienced during the civil war, and community-level efforts to heal Angola after the war. Research in Mozambique in 2000-2001 examined the effects of economic changes on social support and stress.
