Anthropology is the comparative study of peoples and cultures past and present. The discipline has four major subfields – cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and archaeology. The University of Iowa offers training in all four of these subfields:
The Department offers work leading to M.A. and Ph.D degrees in Anthropology. We admit only those students whose ultimate goal is to complete the Ph.D. Topical and areal strengths of the department include cultural politics, economic anthropology, European archaeology, feminist anthropology, medical anthropology, paleoanthropology, cultural evolution, expressive culture, historical archaeology, Asian studies, and Latin American studies. The Department offers both the B.A. and B.S. in anthropology, as well as a minor in anthropology. The department offers three emphasis areas - gender and culture, culture and heritage management, environmental anthropology - for students wishing a greater focus within the major.
