The Department of Anthropology at the University of Iowa offers programs leading to both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Anthropology.
The M.A. can be a general degree that familiarizes the student with Anthropology as a whole, or can be used toward gaining training in more specialized skills within Anthropology. The Department offers an M.A. with a focus on Cultural Resource Management-Archaeology (CRM), which provides academic preparation for a professional career in CRM-Archaeology. The Department works closely with faculty and staff from the Office of the State Archaeologist (http://www.uiowa.edu/~osa/) in the training and teaching of students interested in CRM-Archaeology. The number of credit hours required for the M.A. degree may vary from 30 to 36 semester hours depending upon the student's previous anthropological training, and the particular degree track chosen.
The Ph.D. degree represents a balance between a general competence in the four major subfields of anthropology obtained at the M.A. level, and a professional level of specialization in one. Training in the specialization will be guided by a Ph.D. committee composed of members of the faculty competent in the particular areas and topics chosen by the student.
Prospective applicants should consult the guidelines for applying as well as funding opportunities and familiarize themselves with the requirements and procedures of the graduate college.
Foreign students applying to the program should be aware that either the TOEFL or the IELTS Test is being accepted for English language competency. All IELTS test takers will be required to take the on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation.
