In 1930, the University of Iowa chapter of Alpha Phi Omega was founded. Being the 15th chapter founded on a college campus, Omicron was given as our name because it is the 15th letter in the Greek alphabet. President LaRue Thurson presided over the first meeting and is also the first member of Omicron.

Omicron was considered an Active Chapter until either 1971 or 1972 at which time the chapter went inactive due to no activity on campus.

Starting in the early 1980s, students started to show an interest in being brothers in Alpha Phi Omega again. On April 29, 1984 Omicron was rechartered and considered an active chapter once again.
