Art, architecture of Mexico, Peru before Cortes. The class begins with the Pre-Classic, including the anceint Valley of Mexico, the Olmec, and West Mexico. We then study the art of the Classic period, including the Maya and Teotihuacan, ending with the Early-Post Classic (Toltec, Mixtec) and Late Post-Classic (Aztec). Art of western Sudan (Mali, Burkina Faso, Northern Ivory Coast), Guinea coast (Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria) of Africa. Art in cultural context, so lots of discussion of how art is used to solve problems and mark important passages of life. Emphasis on the Dogon of Mali, the peoples of Burkina Faso, the Mende of Sierra Leone, the Ashanti of Ghana, and the Yoruba of Nigeria.
