7S:187 Seminar: Curriculum and Student Teaching

Discussions, role-playing, group and individual reports, analysis of critical incidents, classroom managament, videotapes of student classroom performance pertinent to participants' student teaching experiences. May be repeated. Corequisite: student teaching

Course Objectives
1. To strengthen abilities in classroom interaction and instruction.
2. To develop skills in self-evaluation of curriculum and teaching practices.
3. To gain a practical understanding of current issues and practices of teaching.
4. To complete job placement documents, employment portfolio, resume, teaching philosophy and to prepare for job interviews.

Course Requirements and Evaluation
1. Attendance: Absences will impact your seminar grade. You may make up half of the credit for a missed class with a written paper on a topic to be assigned. Involvement with a school function for student teaching, i.e. parent conferences, will be an exception and total credit may be made up. Please call Nan at home and leave a message on the answering machine if you will be absent.
2. Quality contribution to class discussions; preparation based on journal question, personal reflection and observations from student teaching experience.
3. Quality, completed assignments, i.e. resume, issues presentation, final presentation.
4. Student teaching journal. Journal topics are listed on a separate page. Due dates are listed below. These journal entries document your preparation for contribution to class discussion, as well as your understanding of classroom interactions and self-evaluation. These should be written up as a minimum of 1 page papers each.

February 4 Classroom management, students off task or disruptive
Student Teaching Proposal due. and Journal 2 and Journal 3

February 11 Classroom management, special circumstances/special help
Select topics for issues presentations. Journal 4

February 18 Resume. Bring three copies to share with each other for response and suggestions before you finalize your resume to date.
Schedule practice interviews.

February 25 Issues presentations. Your presentation should be 5 minutes in length.
Include an article and/or hand-out to give to class members. List at least one reference for additional information.

March 3 Movie: "The First Year". Journal 5

March 10 Share a lesson. Bring copies of the lesson plan.
JOURNALS DUE Journal 6 and Lesson Evaluation from 1st placement, a minimum of two pages. One page to outline and describe the lesson and a second page to evaluate the lesson.
Practice interviews, group #1.

March 12, Friday Midterm day off. New placements start the next school day.

March 24 Update of new placement, classroom management at a new level.

May 12 Final presentations. Each teacher will show their employment portfolio.
You will have about 10 minutes for your presentation. Meet at the
computer lab.
