ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: ALL STUDENTS

1. TOEFL score of 234 (electronic version), 590 (traditional version) or above (for foreign students only).

2. Successful completion of course work that is equivalent to the undergraduate BA in Japanese at The University of Iowa. Students lacking this qualification will be considered for admission as long as they have a strong undergraduate record indicating likelihood of success at the graduate level in their proposed areas of study. Students lacking the equivalent to a BA in Japanese may be required to take courses as prerequisites to MA level work.

3. Students applying to the program in Japanese must indicate in which of the tracks (Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language or Japanese Studies) they intend to concentrate.

4. Students applying to the Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language Track should have Japanese language proficiency equivalent to successful completion of the fourth year level at The University of Iowa. Students whose proficiency is lower than this level may be admitted, but they must take appropriate language courses as determined by the faculty advisor. Students may not count any modern language courses (first through fourth year) toward the 30 s.h. required for the MA degree.

5. Students applying to the Japanese Studies track should have Japanese language proficiency equivalent to successful completion of the second year level at The University of Iowa. This means that students should be able to place into 3rd year Japanese as it is offered at the University of Iowa.

Students will be assigned an advisor at the beginning of their first semester on campus. They are required to submit a plan of study approved by their advisor by the middle of their second semester on campus.
