Margaret H. Mills is a Professor of Russian language and linguistics and Chair of the Department of Asian and Slavic Languages at the University of Iowa. She received her PhD from the University of Michigan (1985) and her MPH from the University of Iowa (2005). She has spent 30 years studying, consulting, and conducting linguistic and public health field work and research in the Soviet Union and Russia. Her research and major publications to date have been in the fields of cross-cultural Russian pragmatics, pragmalinguistics, and cross-cultural professional communication (Russian - English). Since receiving her MPH in "Community and Behavioral Health" Mills has written extensively in the field of Doctor - Patient Communication in both Russia and the US. She is currently the Principal Investigator on a major Department of Education FIPSE grant ($362,000) working with the Plekhanov Academy of Economics in Moscow to prepare future US advanced-level speakers of Russian to work in the fields of math, science, and global health.
