Asian Languages
A minor in Asian Languages requries a minimum of 14-15 semester hours with a grade-point average of at least 2.00. Of the 15 semester hours, at least 12 must be taken at The University of Iowa in advanced courses (numbered 100 or above) unless otherwise specified. Students may earn minors in Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, or Sanskrit.
CHINESE
Students with a Chinese emphasis must complete 039:115-039:116 and 039:128-039:129. In addition, one course must be taken from 039:141, 039:142, or 039:180.
HINDI
Students of Hindi are permitted to complete the advanced course requirement with 11 semester hours, and the minor with a total of 14 s.h. First Year Hindi (039:123, 039:124) is NOT considered advanced for the minor, but may be counted as non-advanced coursework. Courses at Second Year level and higher (039:126, 039:127, 039:184, 039:185, 039:217) are considered advanced.
JAPANESE
Students minoring in Japanese must take 3 s.h. chosen from the advanced level literature, culture or linguistics course taught by the faculty of the department (e.g., 39J:103, 39J:124, 39J:129, 39J:141, 39J:142, 39J:143, 39J:144, 39J:145, 39J:146, 39J:155). The remaining 9 s.h. needed to meet the advanced requirement must be taken in advanced language courses chosen from the following: 39J:101, 39J:102, 39J:105, 39J:106, 39J:107, 39J:108, 39J:119, 39J:120, 39J:121, 39J:122, 39J:131, 39J:132.
SANSKRIT
Students of Sanskrit should take 12 semester hours of advanced courses chosen from among the following: 039:111, 039:112, 039:113, 039:186, 039:187, 039:217.

Certificate in International Business
Students of Chinese, Japanese, and Hindi may participate in a program leading to a Certificate in International Business, offered jointly by the College of Business Administration and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The wide range of electives in the program permits undergraduate students to tailor it to their individual interests and to complete majors in the College of Business Administration and Liberal Arts.
Elementary & Secondary Teaching Licensure in Chinese & Japanese
Chinese and Japanese majors interested in licensure to teach in elementary and/or secondary schools must successfully complete the requirements for a major, or its equivalent, plus designated courses on pedagogy in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature. In addition, students must be admitted to the College of Education's foreign language teacher education program. Several courses in the College of Education are required, as is one semester of student teaching, taken in the senior year.
