General Information

PURPOSE
The Annual Summer School for Helping Professionals offers classes for community, agency, and education practitioners working with or interested in individuals, groups, families, and organizations.

OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of individual classes the participants should be able to:

  1. Identify issues relating to counseling persons of all ages and cultures.
  2. Compare specific theoretical constructs of counseling.
  3. Recognize important knowledge from the specific class content areas.
  4. Practice the cooperative relationships which need to be established among helping professionals.
  5. Evaluate referral networks with other professionals working in different agencies.
  6. Assess their own clinical skill in order to identify and anticipate difficulties with clients.
  7. Formulate and evaluate their own administrative and supervisory skills.

ACADEMIC CREDIT
Academic credit from The University of Iowa is available for all classes. A paper or project, due September 1, is required to earn one semester hour of credit for a 2 day class. Credit will be recorded in early October on a University of Iowa transcript as 07C:182 Workshop for Helping Professionals.

Registration for academic credit for the first 2 day session takes place on Monday, August 9 from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. and for the second 2 day session on Wednesday, August 11 from 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. in the Ballroom Lobby of the Iowa Memorial Union. Instructors of classes available for academic credit will explain paper/project requirements during the first hour of class. Participants will be able to make changes in their credit registrations until 11:00 a.m. on the first day of class. You must have registered for the ASSHP and have received confirmation of your course selection prior to registering for University of Iowa academic credit on August 9 or August 11.

Tuition for academic credit is $305 per semester hour for graduate credit or $196 per semester hour for undergraduate credit. Do not send payment for tuition for academic credit with your ASSHP registration and fee. You will be billed for the tuition by The University of Iowa on September 1. Undergraduates are graded S (Satisfactory) or F (Fail) only. Graduate students are graded S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory), but may request a letter grade. Instructors are not required to honor requests for a letter grade. Grades will be recorded in early October. University credit is granted to participants who properly complete a credit registration form, pay the tuition fee, and demonstrate an understanding of course content at a prescribed level of competency. CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS

An additional fee of $6.00 is required for all types of CEU credit, except nursing which requires a $10 fee. The CEU has been designed to give recognition to persons continuing their education and keeping up-to-date in their chosen field or profession. Please indicate on your registration form the type of CEU requested.

This program is approved for CEUs under 645-280.101(1) of the Iowa Board of Social Work Examiners rules for Continuing Education. The University of Iowa School of Social Work is an Iowa Board of Social Work Examiners approved provider #0034.

The Behavioral Science Board which includes Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists now accepts continuing education hours approved by the Board of Social Work Examiners. Separate certification from each board is no longer necessary. Please select Social Work CEUs if you are interested in obtaining continuing education credit in your area. The University of Iowa (#4062) is recognized by the National Board for Certified Counselors to offer continuing education for National Certified Counselors. We adhere to NBCC Continuing Education Guidelines.

The Iowa Board of Substance Abuse Certification has approved IBSAC credit for selected courses which are indicated in the course descriptions.

The University of Iowa is an approved provider for General CEUs for this program.

CEUs awarded for attendance at the 2 day classes will be: IBSAC, NBCC, Social Work, and General Credit in the amount of 12 hours or 1.2 CEUs. If you attend both sessions you will be awarded 24 hours or 2.4 CEUs.

The University of Iowa College of Nursing is an Iowa Board of Nursing Approved Provider, Number 1. Attendance for a two day ASSHP workshop will award 1.32 CEUs or 13.2 hours. (Monday-Tuesday program number 04-222-93; Wednesday-Thursday program number 04-224-93) If you attend both sessions you will be awarded 2.64 CEUs or 26.4 hours.

REGISTRATION FEES

Payment is required at the time of registration. You will not be registered for your workshop(s) until full payment has been received. Mastercard, Visa and checks accepted.

The Annual Summer School for Helping Professionals will offer 2 day workshop sessions. The first session of 2 day classes will begin on Monday, August 9, 9 a.m. and adjourn on Tuesday, August 10 at 4:00 p.m. The second session of 2 day classes will begin on Wednesday, August 11, 9 a.m. and adjourn on Thursday, August 12 at 4:00 p.m. Participants may elect to combine two 2 day classes for a full 4 days of workshop participation.

Please note that a special registration fee is given for those that register for TWO 2 day sessions.

Please read the workshop descriptions for more information regarding each class.

The registration fee for the 2 day classes is $80 until June 15 and $100 after that date. This fee includes the cost of registration, instruction, 2 continental breakfasts, and daily breaks.

The registration fee for TWO 2 day classes is $150 until June 15 and $175 after that date. This fee includes the cost of registration, instruction, 4 continental breakfasts, and daily breaks.

REFUNDS:
All but $20 of the registration fee is refundable if inability to attend is made known to The Center for Conferences and Institutes (319-335-4141) prior to July 30. No refunds can be made for later notification.

HOUSING:
Participants are responsible for obtaining their own housing. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Iowa House adjacent to the Iowa Memorial Union. Per night room rates are $74 for single and double and $79 for riverview plus 5% state tax. You may make your Iowa House reservation by calling the Iowa House at 319/335-3513. You MUST indicate that you are attending the Annual Summer School for the Helping Professionals. Parking in the IMU ramp is complimentary for those staying in the Iowa House. Rooms will be held in reserve until July 9.

PARKING:
Parking is available in both the IMU parking ramp and the North parking ramp which is located on Madison Street for $.75 per hour, $8 per day. There is also parking in the city parking ramp located downtown at $.60 per hour.

Parking has been arranged at the Hancher Auditorium parking lot (see map) located two blocks northwest of the IMU. Permits for display may be pre-purchased (prior to July 25) or purchased at the time of registration on August 11 and August 13. Permits must be hung from the rearview mirror at the time of parking. Cost is $8 per session.

Pre-purchased permits will be mailed directly to you with your confirmation letter if payment is received before July 25. If you wait to purchase your permit until the first day of class, you must pick up your permit BEFORE parking at Hancher.

If you cancel your conference registration, parking permits MUST be returned to receive a parking permit refund.

CERTIFICATE of ATTENDANCE:
Certificates of Attendance will be provided only if requested. Please indicate your request on your registration form. This certificate is NOT valid for CEU approval. A $1.00 fee is required with your registration payment. Your certificate will be available for pickup in the Ballroom Lobby registration area on the last day of class.

CEU CERTIFICATE:
CEU Certificates will be mailed four weeks after the conference. Please indicate the type of CEU requested on your registration form. A $6.00 fee ($10 for Nursing) for CEU processing is required with your registration payment.
