Fred Mims

Fred Mims - Associate Athletics Director and Director of Athletics Student Services.

Mims has been a staff member of the Iowa Athletic Department for over 30 years, having served as assistant baseball coach, athletic counselor, Assistant Athletic Director and since 1989 as Associate Athletic Director. His major responsibilities include sports administrator, compliance and student support services which involves rules education; certification and eligibility; admissions, financial aid and housing; academic support services and monitoring; and life skills activities.

Mims earned his BA in English from Iowa as well as his MA in Higher Education. While a student, Mims was a multi-sport athlete who played basketball and baseball. He was a two time All Big Ten first team selection in baseball. He led his team to the College World Series and was selected to play in the Pan American Games. Mims played professional baseball in the Houston Astros organization for 4.5 years before returning to the University of Iowa.

Professionally, Mims has served on six NCAA Peer Review Committees which reviews intercollegiate athletics programs and the NCAA Division One committee for Athletic Certification. He represents the UI on the Big Ten's Sports Management committee. He has held several positions with the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) including Treasurer and Newsletter editor. In 1995 Mims was recognized by the N4A with the Lan Hewlett Award for outstanding performace and sustained service as an academic advisor for athletics. In the spring of 2008, Mims received the Distinguished Catalyst Award, sponsored by the University of Iowa Office of Equal Opportunity for his commitment to diversity. Additionally, in the spring of 2008, he received the 2008 Gene Hooks Award, sponsored by the NCAA for his significant and sustained contribution to the CHAMPS program.

Mims was one of the 4 individuals who established the University of Iowa's Multi Cultural Recognition Banquet and remains an active contributing member. Mims sits on several University committees including the Iowa LINK advisory committee and the Presidential Committee on Athletics.

Mims has been an active community member having served on the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Iowa City Human Rights commission, the Johnson County Neighborhood Centers board, and is currently a member of the Community Correction Improvement Association, and the University of Iowa Community Credit Union Board of Directors. He is also a Judicial appointee to the Sixth Judicial District of Corrections for the State of Iowa.

Mims and his wife Susan have four children, Jeremy, Monica, Corey and Kelsey.
