FILM SUMMARY
In 1971 pioneer black filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles released "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song." The film established itself as a significant essay on the issue of race and put the spotlight on independent black cinema. More than 30 years later Mario Van Peebles pays tribute to his father with "Baadasssss!" The new film offers a revealing portrait of his father and his against-all-odds effort to push boundaries with "Sweet Sweetback's." Challenged every step of the way, Melvin financed the film under the guise of a porno and ultimately refused to screen the work for an all-white MPAA ratings board, giving it an automatic X-rating. Experience Van Peebles' struggle in what Roger Ebert describes as "one of the best movies I've seen about the making of a movie." FILM LINKS
