FILM SUMMARY
Maria Alvarez, a 17-year-old Colombian girl living in a small town near Bogota, attempts to bring herself and her dysfunctional, dependent family out of poverty by working long hours. Harassed by her insensitive boss, she quits her job only to finds that her family cannot survive without her income. As her family begins to disintegrate, in desperation she becomes a "mule," a human beast-of-burden who carries latex pills full of heroin to America inside her body. Shot in documentary style, the film eschews the melodrama of other films dealing with drug trafficking and presents both a humane portrait of Maria and her family and a powerful political and social critique. - Audience Award, 2004 Sundance Film Festival - Best Actress & Best First Film, 2004 Berlin Film Festival FILM LINKS
