FILM SUMMARY
Academy-award winning Italian director Gabriele Salvatores ("Mediterraneo") offers a suspenseful tale of 10-year old Michele, whose playful summer in southern Italy is interrupted when he discovers another child chained at the bottom of a hole in a rural wheat field. Michele learns that the boy, Filippo, had been kidnapped. Rather than report his find, Michele keeps Filippo secret, bringing him bread on frequent visits. Like the days of childhood, Salvatores allows the story to unfold slowly, enveloped by the countryside's vast beauty. Stephen Holden of the New York Times writes, "Although this visually dazzling movie from Italy takes on many of the characteristics of a conventional thriller, it refuses to go for cheap, vicious shocks."
