FILM SUMMARY
In this Academy Award-winning documentary, Zana Briski, a British photojournalist, goes to Calcutta's red light district attempting to make a documentary about the prostitutes living and working there. Though her access to the women is limited, she does earn the trust of the district's children. Briski sets up a photography workshop which allows the children to explore their lives and express themselves via a new medium. By intercutting documentary footage with the photographic images captured by the children, a central narrative unfolds: the children's struggle to escape poverty -- and prostitution -- and build a better life. A.O. Scott of The New York Times says, "Briski's documentary about children growing up in Calcutta's rough and squalid red light district is moving, charming and sad."
