FILM SUMMARY
Following the success of her directorial debut - 2001's "La cienaga" - Argentine director Lucrecia Martel returns to the screen with THE HOLY GIRL, a delicately sensual film about adolescent sexuality, religious vocation, and the unlikely territory that the two sometimes share. During a week-long medical conference at her family's hotel, Amalia becomes fascinated with a middle-aged doctor who simultaneously carries on a mild flirtation with her divorced mother. Believing it is her god-given mission to save the man from sin, Amalia draws ever closer to Dr. Jano until she feels obsessed with him -- in both body and spirit. "The influence of pantheon filmmakers such as Bunuel and Bresson is evident, but for the most part Martel carves out her own, distinctive landscape of cinematic soul" (Los Angeles Daily News).
