FILM SUMMARY
On a trip both professional and personal, art dealer Madeleine travels from Chicago to rural North Carolina to recruit an outsider artist, and meet her new husband George's Southern family for the first time. Everyone welcomes George warmly except his younger brother, who is still bitter about George's over-achievement and desertion. Madeleine is greeted with skepticism and bewilderment by all but George's very bubbly -- and very pregnant -- sister-in-law, Ashley. When George falls into his old routine of spending time alone, Madeleine must rely almost entirely on Ashley to help her navigate family dinners, church meetings, and Ashley's baby shower, all while desperately trying to close the deal on the artist. As Madeleine witnesses her new husband's behavior shift along with the geography, she is left wondering how well she really knows him; and when Ashley goes into labor, everyone's priorities are confronted. "You may find yourself caught entrancingly off guard by the conflicting shades of love, suspicion, tradition, and mystery that infuse this tale of lost innocence, deep roots, and what it means to come from the world of the South" (Entertainment Weekly).
