FILM SUMMARY
Winner of the Golden Camera for Best First Film at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, Keren Yedaya's striking directorial debut OR (MY TREASURE) explores the complex relationship between Ruthie, a long-time prostitute, and her 18-year-old daughter Or. Set in modern day Tel Aviv, Or's daily routine consists of working several jobs in order to support her aging and sick mother. As Ruthie prowls the streets at night desperate for money, and Or collects cans and washes dishes for extra pay, both women struggle with their working-class neighborhood and their own moral decisions. Yedaya directs the film with a natural, minimalist style evoking neorealism and fellow Middle Eastern filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. Subtle and humanistic, OR is a fine example of the recent new wave of Israeli cinema.
