The Sea Inside
FILM SUMMARY

Based on a true story, Javier Bardem portrays Ramon Sampedro, a man who broke his neck early in life and spent more than a quarter of a century as a quadriplegic, confined to his bed. Reflecting on his past and considering his future, he chooses to die, but is restrained by his own physical condition. When he petitions the courts for permission to be euthanized, he sets off controversy throughout Spain, as well as in his own house. "The Sea Inside" tells the story of Ramon's 30-year campaign to win the right to end his life with dignity and his relationships with two women: Julia, a lawyer who supports his cause, and Rosa, a local woman who wants to convince him that life is worth living.

2005 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
